A Contrarian’s Beginning

“Coming from the species of contrarians, be warned that I instinctively deconstruct everything that seems to me established as too narrowly normative.”

This sentence could serve as my opening warning. It captures the posture that guides both my life and my writing: a refusal of overly comfortable certainties, an incessant curiosity, and a stubborn pursuit of what lies behind appearances.

After forty years of a career in international law and decades of humanitarian engagement in Southeast Asia, I have chosen to devote my retirement to what has always been my obsession: writing. Writing to understand, writing to question, writing to resist the oversimplifications of the modern world.

Why this site, why this blog? Because writing does not live in silence. It seeks resonance, it seeks encounter. Here, I will share:

  • Reflections on society and its contradictions,
  • Excerpts from my manuscripts — novels, essays, philosophical explorations,
  • Updates on my author’s journey, literary competitions and upcoming publications,
  • And occasionally, personal digressions, because writing is never entirely separate from life.

If you are here, perhaps it is because you too feel that ready-made answers are no longer enough. I invite you to accompany me on this journey. You will not find definitive truths here, but questions. And perhaps echoes.

See you soon,
Simon d’Orlaq
